Madeline Tong, B.Sc.
Position: M.Sc. Candidate
Maddy completed her Hon B. Sc. at Queen's University in Life Sciences with a specialization in biomedical sciences in 2015. Outside the lab she enjoys spending her time cooking, baking and playing board games with friends.
Maddy currently works on identifying novel chemical probes and potential drug leads that target bacterial nutrient biosynthetic pathways. A library of 50,000 synthetic compounds was screened for growth inhibition in E. coli grown in media with the minimal amount of nutrients required for its survival. Compounds that inhibit growth of E. coli in these minimal conditions but not when supplemented with nutrients likely target the biosynthetic genes that are only expressed in an environment where the nutrient is not present.
